‘”Red Sky at Night” is a barbershop piece about watching the sunset with the one you love, but the lyrics also represent accomplishment- the day the time when you work, so at night you can do what you love, be with whom you love. Watching the red sunset represents watching your last responsibilities be completed as the last clouds drift away, leaving you free to do what you want and heralding a cloudless day; a day free of responsibilities. When I was writing the lyrics, I focused on this metaphor, and also the contrast of blue and red.
This piece was inspired by how I felt when I was finishing my college applications, something I had been working on very hard for a long time. I knew that as soon as I finished them, I would have much more time to pursue my own interests.
I had a lot of fun writing this piece due to it’s lighthearted and theatrical tone, which was a new style for me.”
