Running Brook

Molly Durling
Grade 7, The Grammar SchoolMollyDurling

“Running Brook is for flute, oboe, violin 1, violin 2, viola, and cello. I wanted this piece to resemble the different currents in a brook. I thought of a place in my town called the Mad Brook. It runs all year with water from many small sources. The brook flows fast in some parts and slow in others; it also has little swirling eddies and small sand bars where children play in the summer.  At the end of this piece, I wanted the sound of the brook joining the Connecticut River and continuing into the ocean. I thought about watching or tracking (if you could) a single leaf floating along until the end.”
