A Confabulation for Trombone and Tuba

“con-fab-u-late (def)

1. To talk casually; chat.

2. To fill in gaps in one’s memory with fabrications that one believes to be facts.

This duet for trombone and tuba is a friendly conversation. The melody starts in the trombone, though the tuba is often finishing the trombone’s ideas. The two trade back and forth in this way until measure 17, when the tuba gets two measures to itself before the trombone comes in creating a canon. Throughout the piece, the two instruments are engaged in a steady trading of rhythms that keeps the melody rolling and bouncing along in a string of eighth notes. With the constant back and forth exchange of ideas and the trading and filling in of melody, this is a true musical confabulation.”
